SYSTRAN Translation Widget | Fix

If you're having trouble trying to fix SYSTRAN translation widget, which just sits there and won't let you pull down languages, then here's how to fix it:-

  • Download Pref Setter

  • In your computer, search for the file:-
    widget-com.apple.widget.translation.plist
either in Spotlight, or in the folder: Home/Library/Prefrences.

  • Open that file using Pref Setter
Change the "fromlanguage" value to 3, and the "tolanguage" value to 4.

  • Save changes.

  • Go into Dashboard, if the Translator widget is running, remove it from your dashboard then add it back on.

  • Now it should be working properly.

Oh my gosh!! You are a genius!!
I was having trouble with my translator... it was stuck on translate from Japanese and it would not let my change the from or to language or type anything in the box! And I use this widget everyday - I am studying Spanish and French and it is very useful!
I've been trying so many things to try and fix it, but nothing worked... but I just tried what you said to do using prefsetter and it works again! Just like that! Wow!!! :D

So I just want to thank you so so so much because this really helped me and I appreciate it so much!!

OMG, you are amazing!! Thank you sooo much! I really thought that widget was awesome and was so sad when it stopped working... You are amazing!! But - but - here's a question - why does it stop working in the first place?? lol, thanks so much!

You're most welcome and I'm glad to be of service.

I have no idea why it stops but I guess it has to do with program permissions and new updates. But now you know how to fix it you don't need to know why it gets messed up, now do you? ;P

Curious, I was having the same problems, and I was told to just delete the whole widget and file then download it again after. Now I can't find anyplace to download the Systran widget anywhere!! What do I do? Do you have any suggestions? Thanks in advance, I know this is an old blog post. Thanks!

    Hey Jared

Sorry but I don't think Systran Translation widget is available for download, it comes directly with OS X package. However, there's a good alternative, check it out and hope you find it useful. [link]

    Good luck.

Thanks for posting this most appreciated fix! Translator is the most useful widget...although my version stopped functioning several months ago. After re-installing OS X (for other reasons) the widget was still broken...but your tip has restored its usefulness. I edited the plist using Property List Editor (the Developer tool). I'd like to know how you worked this one out!?

Well I knew Pref Setter can alter applications preferences and when my widget stopped I located it's preference list (.plist) and out of desperation I started playing with it thinking its a loose loose situation, either it'll be fixed or remain faulty as it is, and that's how I unintentionally fixed it.

this helped me a couple months ago...now i get gibberish when i translate to Korean...and so i tried other asian translations...all gibberish (not even actual asian alphabets). any ideas how to possibly fix that?

I'm not sure what might be causing the problem but try changing the "fromlanguage" value upwards or downwards. (1, 2, 5, 6... etc)
