ALL Techies | Please check in

I'm going to buy an LCD TV and I need some opinions. Now before I rush and buy what I have in mind (40" Sony BRAVIA KDL-40V2500), I want to know if there are any better alternatives. If you do recommend another TV, please give me a practical reason of why you see it's better.

I'm open for all suggestions just bear in mind that I won't go for anything less than 40" with full HD setup (1080p) and high contrast ratio. Price isn't an issue since I'll buy it by installments, however, it's preferable that it does not exceed 750KD in cash so profit won't rape my pocket.

I still haven't got my head around HDTVs. Since you're going for 40", buying an LCD monitor is probably out of the question.

You should read some reviews, but remember that pricing here is completely out of proportion.

Sony would be a good choice if you don't mind the price tag.

I would suggest you check out LG for any LCD-tvs .. I picked up one a while back for a great price.

And you might want to rethink 1080p .. Running 720p movies is great quality and you could get a 46" tv for the price of a 40".

1080p is quite limited at the moment; and by the time it becomes standard you could get a better TV for cheaper.

I've read some of the reviews and they didn't take long to make me sure that there are no alternatives to Sony and Samsung. Now Sony is pretty overpriced compared to Samsung but that won't be a big deal since I'll be getting it in installments.

I'll figure out what to settle on. Thanks for the link(s).

GEO:
Nice suggestion, thanks. According to the reviews I read Samsung is quite impressive. I'll go check our local dealer soon.

Ali: Enshallah.

Technology is constantly moving forward, if I don't get what's best right this moment, it will fade like a dull fad and I know I'll be regretting not getting what is better. I'm looking for something that'll survive on the long run, therefore 1080p is a must.

I have checked LG and I really like their models (and best of all their Prices!) but compared to Sony and Samsung models, LG has to play elsewhere.

TAT:
Let me know about it when you get one, if it's Full HD (1080p) model of course

Actually .. I have both a 42" Sony LCD (V-Series) and a 42" LG LCD .. And to be honest .. I prefer the dark tones of the LG screen.

At the end of the day, most of the screens are made in the same factory; if you can find a LG with similar features .. go for it!

Well then based on your experience I will take your words for granted and go check LG soon. I liked their Flatron M4200D model (Full HD with 3D engine) but I'm not sure if it has reached our market or not.

Any idea where their dealer's located?

Thank you.

I usually go to their store in Old Salmiya; its next to AlGhanim/Al-Yousifi where Kid's'us used to be.

Also, Don't purchase their HDMI/HD cables .. they are way to expensive (41kd for 2m). I got a 5m cable for 8kd and its amazing quality.

Currently I have tried the Samsung LCD, Sony 37" LCD, and Toshiba 37" LCD. The samsung is not 1080p and its sometimes is unclear so overall I wasn't happy with it.

My best recommendation after trying both the Sony and Toshiba side by side with games and movies, and also series streaming from Media PC I would recommend the Toshiba

Check out the reviews

The Toshiba Regza 42" is clear with a high contrast ratio and great sound. I was impressed with what Toshiba made, 6 months ago I would have recommended the Sony, but now I'm recommending this TV without a doubt.

You can find it at Alghanim Electronics. Thats the only place i saw it.

I went to their Hawalli showroom yesterday and fought with their stupid salesman. I was inquiring about their models and the mofo kept ignoring me. I asked him to show me what LCD models they have and he told me to go check them myself. Then when I specified to him what specs I'm looking for he literally told me "You know a lot more than I do, why don't you go check their specs brochure over there?" then he turned around and went to sit on his desk. wth?! I spat at him and walked out and told him to shove his attitude and LCDs up his @$$.

I know what I did wasn't appropriate but I don't know how to deal with such situations. I should have asked for the manager but anyways, it happened and I don't regret it.

I took LG off my mind because of this incident.

Anyways, thanks for the cables tip.

Marzouq:
I have seen Regza at Al-Ghanim and have compared the one in the link you gave me with Sony & Samsung and I like it very much. It does have all the standards I'm looking for. However, the one at Al-Ghanim is not the Full HD 1080p model (42HL196), it's the HD Ready 720p (42WL66E) model. Besides, its price is about the price of Sony KDL. :/

Therefore I will wait and check all models once again after Eid. Maybe when the new Full HD models come out those older models will drop in price. I'll wait and see.

Thanks for the reply.
